Fishing Hook Lands On Tiny Sea Eagle Chick SE37 At Sydney Olympic Park

On August 23, 2026, what began as a routine meal at the Sydney Olympic Park sea eagle nest turned frightening in seconds when fishing line and a hook were discovered attached to Dad’s catch.

Lady was feeding SE37 and SE38 when the tackle became visible among the remains of the fish. She picked up the hook in her beak and shook it. Seconds later, it dropped directly onto tiny SE37’s back.

The hook did not stay there.

It slipped from the chick, fell into the nest and disappeared beneath the surrounding material. Neither SE37 nor SE38 suffered an injury, but the hook’s sudden disappearance created a new concern: it was no longer visible, and viewers could not know exactly where it had gone. EagleCAM temporarily stopped the livestream while officials investigated the situation.

Fishing Hook Appears During SE37 And SE38’s Meal

The morning began with something viewers of Lady and Dad’s nest have seen countless times. Dad brought in a fish, and Lady settled into feeding the two chicks.

SE37 and SE38 are still incredibly young, spending much of their days tucked together in the nest bowl, sleeping beneath Lady and stretching upward when food arrives. At first, this meal looked like another ordinary part of their rapidly changing first days.

Then something unusual appeared beside the fish. Fishing line could be seen among the remains, with a hook still attached. Lady paused over it before taking the hook into her beak. She lifted and shook the tackle, and what happened next lasted only seconds. The fishing hook landed onto SE37’s back. For a moment, it rested across the chick’s downy back. Then it fell away.

The Hook Falls Off SE37 And Disappears Into The Nest

The immediate relief was enormous: the hook did not remain attached to SE37, and the chick showed no obvious sign of injury. But the danger had not necessarily left the nest.

After falling from SE37, the hook disappeared into the nest material. Lady returned to the area and moved pieces of nesting material around, but the tackle could no longer be clearly seen.

That uncertainty changed the situation. A hook that has vanished beneath leaves, bark and other nest material may be out of reach, but without seeing exactly where it went, there was no way for viewers to know whether it had become safely buried or could eventually work its way back toward one of the chicks.

Ranger Judy reported that neither SE37 nor SE38 suffered any injuries. She also said EagleCAM temporarily stopped the stream to allow a thorough investigation and that the team would consult National Parks before taking any necessary action. The livestream later returned, but those frightening few seconds remain an important reminder of the dangers fishing tackle can pose to wildlife.

Fishing Line And Hooks Can Become Serious Wildlife Hazards

For a White-bellied Sea-Eagle, bringing fish back to the nest is completely normal.

The fishing gear attached to this one was not.

Lost or discarded fishing line can remain in the environment long after it leaves a person’s hands. Birds can become tangled in line, while hooks can cause puncture wounds or other injuries if they become caught on the body or swallowed. That makes this incident especially unsettling because SE37 and SE38 are still so small.

Neither chick can simply fly away from something dangerous inside the nest. Their world right now consists almost entirely of the nest bowl, their parents and the food Lady and Dad bring home. A single piece of tackle suddenly introduced something completely foreign into that tiny space.

Neither Sea Eagle Chick Appears Injured

The most important news from the encounter is also the best. SE37 and SE38 were reported to be okay. There was no indication that the hook became embedded in SE37 when it landed on the chick’s back, and the little sea eagle continued normally afterward. That distinction matters. What viewers can actually see is the hook landing on the chick and then falling away.

The remaining question is what happened to the tackle after it disappeared into the nest. For now, the evidence leaves that question unresolved. The hook may have slipped beneath the nest material, but without further confirmation, we cannot assume anyone removed it or that it no longer poses a risk.

A Tiny Chick, One Fish And A Very Human Reminder

Lady and Dad cannot know what may come attached to every fish they carry back to their young. That morning, a meal brought something else with it. One moment SE37 and SE38 were simply waiting to be fed. The next, a fishing hook was lying across one tiny chick’s back. SE37 was fortunate. The hook slipped away without an apparent injury, and both chicks remained safe.

But watching it disappear into the nest made the moment difficult to shrug off. For people who fish around waterways shared with eagles and other wildlife, accounting for line, hooks and other tackle may seem like a very small responsibility. From the middle of a sea eagle nest, it suddenly looked enormous.

    FAQ:

Did the fishing hook injure SE37?

No. The fishing hook landed on SE37’s back before falling away into the nest material. Ranger Judy reported that neither SE37 nor SE38 was injured.

How did a fishing hook get into the Sydney Olympic Park sea eagle nest?

Dad brought a fish to the nest that had fishing line and a hook attached. Ranger Judy said the fish appeared to be a throw-back from a fisherman.

What happened after the hook landed on SE37?

The fishing hook landed and then slipped off SE37 then disappeared into the nest material. Lady later moved material around the area, but the hook was no longer clearly visible.

Was the Sydney Olympic Park sea eagle livestream stopped?

Yes. EagleCAM temporarily stopped the stream so the team could investigate the situation. Ranger Judy said the team would consult National Parks before taking any necessary action. The livestream later returned.

Are the sea eagle chicks okay?

Yes. Both young White-bellied Sea-Eagle chicks were reported unharmed following the incident.

Why are fishing hooks and line dangerous for sea eagles?
